David Coil

Project Scientist at University of California, Davis

BIO:

David Coil is a Project Scientist responsible for supervising undergraduate research projects in microbiology, microbial ecology, and genomics in the lab of Jonathan Eisen. Also managing research projects/collaborations in the lab including microbial sampling, metagenomics, and bacterial genome assembly. And finally, performing public outreach in microbiology through the microBEnet project, which is focused on communication in the context of studies of microbiology of the built environment (including sending bacteria into space). David is the creator of “Gut Check: The Microbiome GameĀ.

David received his PhD in 2005 from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center/University of Washington, working on retroviruses. Since then he has lectured at the UW, done a post-doc in Belgium working on Legionella, and helps direct a non-profit in Alaska called Ground Truth Trekking.

Elisabeth Bik

Science Editor at uBiome, Inc, San Francisco

BIO:

After receiving her PhD at Utrecht University in The Netherlands with work on epidemic Vibrio cholerae strains, she worked at the Dutch National Institute for Health and the St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein, where she set up a molecular microbiology unit for the detection and typing of clinical and nosocomical strains. In 2001, she joined the School of Medicine at Stanford, where she worked on the characterization of the human microbiome in oral, gastric, and intestinal samples. In addition, she studied the microbiome of marine mammals, including dolphins and sea lions. In November 2016, Elisabeth joined uBiome as a Science Editor. When she is not in the lab or writing, she can be found working on her blog Microbiome Digest, an almost daily compilation of scientific papers in the rapidly growing microbiome field, or on Twitter at @MicrobiomDigest. She also searches the biomedical literature for inappropriatedly duplicated or manipulated photographic images and plagiarized text.
