Official Rules


The contest begins May 17, 2017 at 6:00 AM PST and ends on August 14, 2017 at 6:00 PM PST.


The contest is open to applicants who meet the following criteria: Must be over 18 years of age. Entrants must have been awarded their Ph.D. in the last 5 years. Both men and women are given an extension to the length of time from being awarded their Ph.D. that is equivalent to the time taken away from research due to the birth or adoption of a child, or the direct care of sick, injured, or disabled children for a maximum of up to 18 months per child.

Employees and immediate family members of QIAGEN cannot participate in the contest.

This is an international contest. Submissions to the Awards are admitted from any researcher regardless of age, gender, country of origin, background or religion.

Submissions will not be accepted from members of scientific groups supervised by any of the judges. A list of judges can be found here: https://mobio.com/judges

The research described in the submission must fall within the Microbiome field. Incomplete submissions or those that do not meet the requirements will be rejected.

Health care providers are not eligible to enter.

Each entrant is responsible to confirm that its submission and participation is permitted by the rules of its university or organization.


To enter the drawing, complete the application found at  https://mobio.com/application. One entry per entry representative. The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.   The winner will be selected according to the judging process outlined below and notified by telephone call or email from QIAGEN no later than October 3, 2017.

Submissions will be accepted until August 14, 2017 at 6:00 PM PST.


The winning entry is chosen by outside experts chosen from professional consultants, university faculty, and industrial researchers with expertise and experience in the area of Microbiome Research. Members of the judging panel must be unbiased and have no conflicts of interest with any entries. A list of judges can be found here: https://mobio.com/judges

Entries will be graded based on:

Scientific merit of research proposal (50pts) Originality/Innovation (20 pts) Likelihood of successfully conducting proposed research (20pts) Impact of DNA & RNA Isolation on the project (10 pts)


The winner will be announced publicly on October 4, 2017.


A single grand prize winner will receive the following prize page valued at up to $65,000 USD. No additional awards will be given.

  • 2 year license to Microbial Genomics Pro Suite
  • Analysis of 250 samples using Cosmos ID Genomics Platform
  • NGS Library Prep of 96 samples using choice of kit OR $3,000 USD in library prep services
  • Sample Prep of 400 samples using any DNA or RNA isolation Kit OR $3,000 USD in DNA or RNA isolation services
  • FREE QIAcube or PowerLyzer Homogenizer

All taxes, including, without limitation, federal, state, and local taxes on or in connection with the Prize are the sole responsibility of the winning entry.  Sponsor reserves the right to substitute any prize of equal or greater value in its sole discretion.  No cash prize alterative to the price will be awarded and the prize is not transferable.

The QIAcube or PowerLyzer are provided “as is,” and QIAGEN will install the equipment and provide standard training in the use of the equipment. The instrument of choice will ship to the winner when inventory becomes available.

Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the contest in its sole discretion.  By participating in the contest, entrants agree to release and hold harmless the Sponsor from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the contest, including any errors in the administration of the promotion, printing errors, and technical errors, and the winner and his or her entry agree to release and hold harmless the Sponsor as well from receipt or use of any prize awarded, and further agrees to the disclosure of the name of the winning entry. 

The Official Rules are governed by, and must be construed in accordance with, the laws of Maryland.  Entrants agree that all disputes arising from or in connection with this contest and the prize awarded must be heard in a state or federal court of the State of Maryland.  This contest is void where prohibited by law.  To learn the identity of the winning company, send an email to GUSCustomercareCarlsbad@qiagen.com.
